2. Job Overview

UPSC will hold the Combined Geo-Scientist Examination, 2027 to select candidates for Geologist, Geophysicist and Chemist posts (Group ‘A’) and their Assistant-level Group ‘B’ equivalents in the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Ministry of Mines, and Scientist ‘B’ and Assistant posts in the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Ministry of Jal Shakti. The exam is conducted in three stages: Preliminary (Objective), Main (Descriptive/Conventional) and Personality Test/Interview.

6. Eligibility Criteria

Nationality

Citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal/Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came to India before 01-01-1962 with intent to permanently settle, or a person of Indian origin migrated from Pakistan/Burma/Sri Lanka/certain East African countries/Vietnam with intent to permanently settle in India (categories other than Indian citizens require an eligibility certificate from the Government of India).

Educational Qualification

A relevant Master’s Degree (minimum two years’ duration after graduation) from a recognised University/Institute is required, varying by post: Geological Science/Geology/Applied Geology and allied fields for Geologist and Assistant Geologist; Physics/Geophysics and allied fields for Geophysicist, Scientist ‘B’ (Geophysics) and Assistant Geophysicist; Chemistry/Applied/Analytical Chemistry for Chemist, Scientist ‘B’ (Chemical) and Assistant Chemist; Geology/Applied Geology/Hydrogeology for Scientist ‘B’ (Hydrogeology) and Assistant Hydrogeologist. Candidates awaiting final results of a qualifying exam may also apply, subject to conditions.

Physical Standards

Candidates must meet the physical standards prescribed in Appendix-II of the CGSE 2027 Rules published in the Gazette of India dated 02-09-2026.

7. Application Fee

Fee is payable via Net Banking, or Visa/Master/RuPay Credit/Debit Card, or UPI. Fee once paid is non-refundable and cannot be adjusted against any other exam.

8. Scheme of Examination

Total marks across all three stages: 1200 (Preliminary 400 + Main 600 + Personality Test 200). Marks scored in the Preliminary Examination count toward the final merit.

1. Stage-I: Combined Geo-Scientist (Preliminary) Examination – Objective Type, 10-01-2027.
2. Stage-II: Combined Geo-Scientist (Main) Examination – Conventional/Descriptive Type, 19 & 20-06-2027.

10. How to Apply

1. Visit upsconline.nic.in and complete the Online Application Portal’s Account Creation, Universal Registration Number (URN) and Common Application Form (CAF) modules (common to all UPSC exams).
2. Fill the Examination Specific Module for CGSE 2027, including fee payment and choice of exam centre.
3. Upload photograph and capture a live photograph as prompted; sign three times on plain white paper with black ink and upload the scanned signature.
4. Keep scanned copies ready: certificate of age, educational qualification certificate, category certificate (if applicable), and PwBD certificate (if applicable).
5. Pay the applicable fee online and submit before 22-09-2026, 18:00 hrs. No withdrawal or correction is allowed after submission (except a one-time URN profile edit facility that does not affect already-submitted applications).

12. General Instructions

• No withdrawal of application is permitted after submission, and no correction/alteration is allowed in any field post-submission.
• Government servants must inform their Head of Office/Department in writing that they have applied; a withheld-permission communication from the employer can lead to rejection/cancellation of candidature.
• Mobile phones and other electronic/communication devices are strictly banned inside the examination venue, even in switched-off mode.
• Face authentication is mandatory for all candidates at the examination venue.
• Candidates should choose their preferred exam centre carefully; requests for change of centre are not entertained, and appearing at a centre other than the one allotted invalidates the candidature.
• Reserved-category candidates cannot later request a change to a different reserved category or to Unreserved after declaration of the final result.
