1. Overview

The High Court of Jharkhand, Ranchi has invited applications for engagement of 25 (Twenty-five) Law Researchers/Research Associates for the Hon’ble Judges of the High Court, on a purely contractual basis, vide Advertisement No. 01/Recruitment Cell/2026 dated 05.09.2026.

2. Eligibility Criteria

Age Limit (as on the date of advertisement)

A candidate must not be less than 21 years and not more than 28 years of age as on the date of advertisement (05.09.2026).

Educational Qualification

  • Any fresh Law Graduate/Post Graduate from a University/College recognised by the Bar Council of India is eligible to apply.
  • Students studying in the 5th year of a 5-year Law course, or final year of a 3-year Law course, are also eligible; final selection is subject to passing the LL.B. final year examination prior to engagement.
  • Candidates who have passed all examinations in the first attempt with at least 60% aggregate marks alone are eligible to apply.
  • Candidates pursuing a Post Graduate degree in Law or any other degree/programme requiring compulsory attendance are not eligible.
  • Familiarity with computers will be given preference in selection.

The candidature of a practicing lawyer must be recommended by a designated Senior Advocate. For applicants who are not lawyers, recommendation must come from the Head of the last Law School/College/University attended.

3. Honorarium / Stipend

Each Law Researcher/Research Associate will be paid a consolidated amount of ₹40,000/- per month as honorarium/stipend, or such higher amount as may be prescribed by the State Government from time to time. They will not be entitled to any other allowance and will not be treated as a permanent or regular employee of the High Court or the State Government.

5. Documents Required with Application

  • Matriculation Certificate as proof of Date of Birth.
  • Marksheets (all semesters/years) of Law Graduation and Post Graduation (if applicable).
  • Provisional/Original Degree Certificate of Law Graduation and Post Graduation (if applicable).
  • Recommendation letter by a designated Senior Advocate, or by the Head of the last Law School/College/University attended (for non-lawyer applicants).
  • Computer certificate, if any.

6. Selection Procedure

Selection will be based on merit and interview, conducted by Hon’ble the Chief Justice or a Committee appointed by Hon’ble the Chief Justice. Shortlisted candidates will be intimated individually via their registered email address; no TA/DA will be paid for attending the interview.

Candidates must submit a scanned copy of the duly filled application form, along with scanned copies of all enclosures, combined into a single PDF file (not exceeding 10 MB), via email to rgjhc.jhr@gmail.com between 07.09.2026 and 28.09.2026 only.

Candidates are not required to send a physical printout of the application form or documents to the High Court. No advance copy will be accepted, and requests for correction after the closing date will not be entertained.

8. Nature of Job, Terms & Service Conditions

  • Engagement is purely temporary and contractual for a term of one year, extendable once for one year (maximum two years), subject to satisfactory performance and approval of Hon’ble the Chief Justice.
  • It is a full-time job; the Law Researcher/Research Associate may be required to attend the residential office of the concerned Hon’ble Judge, including on gazetted/local holidays.
  • Headquarters will be the High Court at Ranchi; leaving headquarters or availing leave requires the Judge’s prior permission.
  • Entitled to Casual Leave as applicable to State Government employees; no other leave is admissible.
  • Engagement does not confer any right to regular employment under the High Court or the State Government.
  • Premature resignation requires two months’ prior notice or the residuary tenure, whichever is higher.
  • Termination may be initiated by the High Court with one month’s notice or one month’s salary in lieu.

9. Bar to Practice & Confidentiality

The Law Researcher/Research Associate shall not be entitled to practice as a lawyer or take up any other employment/engagement (full-time or part-time) during the term of engagement. They shall not appear before the Hon’ble Judge to whom they were attached for one year after termination of engagement, nor appear in any case they worked on for that Judge. Strict confidentiality must be maintained regarding all official matters, and violations are punishable under the Indian Penal Code and the Indian Official Secrets Act, 1923, as applicable to a public servant.
