1. Overview

Central Railway, General Manager’s Office (Law Cell), CSMT Mumbai has invited applications from interested Advocates for empanelment as Railway Advocates for District and Subordinate Courts under the jurisdiction of Central Railway, covering the states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka. This is an empanelment (panel) of advocates and not a regular salaried post. Applications are open from 21.09.2026 to 23.10.2026.

4. Eligibility Criteria

4.1 Educational Qualification

Degree in Law (LL.B.) from a recognised University. Preference may be given to advocates with higher qualifications in Law or related disciplines.

4.2 Professional Experience

• Minimum 3 years of experience in practice as an Advocate. The experience certificate must be endorsed by the Chairman of the concerned Bar Association and submitted with the application.
• The tenure of handling legal cases in the Railways by superannuated Railway Officials who have enrolled as Advocates is considered towards the eligibility criteria, with a certificate (period in year/month) endorsed by the respective DGM/Law, DY CLO or legal head of the Zonal Railway/PU.
• Length of legal practice is considered. Specialisation and experience in representing Railways, Government, PSUs or similar institutions carry added weight.

4.3 Other Factors Considered

• Infrastructure: Weightage for proper infrastructure – office premises, junior advocate, clerical staff, computer, printer and internet connection.
• Professional achievements: Number of cases with favourable judgments/orders and decisions reported in reputed legal journals or databases.
• Integrity and background: Track record and integrity may be verified, including a discreet enquiry with the Bar Council or Bar Association if necessary.

5. Selection Process

1. Applications meeting the eligibility criteria are shortlisted by Central Railway – twice the number of advocates required to be empanelled.
2. Shortlisted advocates are informed by email (from which the application was submitted) with the date and venue of the personal interview.
3. The constituted Committee conducts the personal interview.
4. Apart from the interview, the Committee may make an independent enquiry, including physical verification of the applicant’s office, library, sitting arrangement and other infrastructure.
5. The list of advocates finalised by the Committee for each court is submitted to the General Manager for approval.
